notes
Some line changes have gone into affect, last night, Schooley paired Hervato, Longpre and Kushneriuk on the top line, with Lewis, Kobialko and South on the second line.

At the end of the Ferris State series, it was noticeable that Longpre was getting the majority of the pressure when his line was out on the ice, as the Bulldogs raced after him, being the top threat on the line and on the power play.

Cody Chricton was also scratched from last nite’s game, there is a possiblity that will happen again, with the Coaching staff looking for more out of him on the ice in his defence.

Eric Levine will be starting in goal tonite.

serieshist

10/17/08 – RMU 6 – FSU 3

10/18/08 – RMU 4 – FSU 4

Robert Morris currently holds the series record of 1-0-1, averaging 5.0 goals per game, and FSU averaging 3.5 goals per game. Ferris State’s power play is running at 18.2% (2-11) and 56.3% (9-16) on the penalty kill the all-time series, while Robert Morris has posted a 43.8% rating on the power play (7-16) and a rating of 81.8% (9-11) on the penalty kill. In the win last season on October 17th, it was currently Colonial #21 Nathan Longpre who scored twice (once on the power play) to get the Colonial attack going. On October 18th, it was Longpre again who scored (short-handed), as well as #17 Chris Kushneriuk (who scored twice) and now Student Assistant Coach, Kyle Burton.

The Colonials out-shot the Bulldogs 30-23 on October 17th, and a change of pace in the second game October 18th, when the Bulldogs surged for 40 shots, to RMU’s 21.

Robert Morris was able to stay poised in the Friday night game, even with 9 penalties, but what kept them going on Saturday was limiting their time in the box to only 5 times, a trend that needs to continue in this year’s weekend series.

bulldogpower

Ferris State is currently 3-1-0, with two wins coming against Connecticut and one win/one loss at Canisus (both are AHA teams).

In their only loss to Canisus, they were shutout 1-0, but out-shot Canisus 48-21, but their acchilies heel was 72 penalty minutes (17 penalties). Canisus also served 16 penalties for 59 minutes, both teams were unable to score on the power play, as Ferris State went 0-7 and Canisus went 0-6.

In the Bulldogs 3 wins this season, they have limited themselves to an average of only 37 shots per game (seeing 25), and are 4 of 19 on the power play (21%), but have served only 21 penalties for 64 minutes (averaging 7 penalties for 21 minutes per game).

There has also been split time in goal between Senior #30 Pat Nagle and Sophomore #29 Tyler Nelson. It’s uncertain as of how Head Coach Bob Daniels will set up his goaltending matchup, I would make the assumption based on their current layout that we will see both goaltenders, similar to how Coach Derek Schooley used to use both Joe Tuset and Christian Boucher on Friday/Saturday matchups.

Both goaltenders are putting up great numbers for Daniels, Nagle holds the current loss, but hosts a .955% save percentage, and a GAA of only 1.01. Nelson putting up a .961% save percentage, and a GAA of 1.00. Nelson has only played for 1:18 longer than his counterpart, 7 more shots (51) making 49 total saves. Nagle has seen 44 shots, making 42 saves, as both goaltenders have only given up 2 goals each.

As a team, the power play is somewhat stagnant at 4 for 23 (17%), but the penalty kill has been phenomenal at 96%, killing 22 of 23 penalties. The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 13 to 4 in goals, with sophomores Derek Grahman (forward) and Chad Billins (defence), leading the team with 4 points a piece (1 G, 3 A each).

Saturday Preview: Alaska-Anchorage

PreviewOct17

RMU will take on Alaska-Anchorage tonite at 7:05pm Eastern in game 2 of the 2009 Brice Gold Rush, after dropping their season opener (4-2) to #17 Alaska-Fairbanks. The Seawolves are 2-1 on the season, after they shutout RPI last nite 3-0. They lost to Michigan on October 10th, 6-1 after they beat Mercyhurst the nite before, 5-3.

Against Mercyhurst the Seawolves were 2/5 on the powerplay, but committed 9 penalties, while putting up 29 shots and giving up 22. The following nite, Michigan put up 26 shots, compared to 16 for UAA, they were 0/4 on the powerplay, but only committed 4 penalties. Last nite, they were 0/5 on the powerplay, committed 5 penalties, and put up 27 shots versus RPI’s 25. The Seawolves can have a high powered offence when playing even strength, but if you keep them in check, and don’t put them on the powerplay, they can easily be beaten.

Friday Preview: #17 Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks

October 15, 2009 by Dave Weldon

Nanooks

The Colonials will open up regular season play Friday nite at the 2009 Brice Alaska Gold Rush, at the Carlson Sports Arena, where they will see the #17 University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks in their first game. On Saturday, Robert Morris will face the University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves (Game Preview Saturday morning).

The more important question you might be asking yourself right now, What exactly is a “Nanook”? I had to look it up, but a Nanook comes from the Inuit mythology of the Nanuq, where from the Inuit language means polar bear.

Even though this is a road game, this may lead to an advantage for Robert Morris, as they will be playing on an Olympic sized rink, which is 15 feet wider than an NHL sized rink (like the home ice at the ISC). How is this an advantage? Good question, going up against a fast opponent, who put up 2 goals on #3 Michigan, then 5 against Mercyhurst, only seeing one goal scored in those games, both of which were away games (NHL sized rinks), a larger Olympic sized rink can potentially slow down any breakout plays that can exploit the defence.

As far as the game goes, expect to see a lot of neutral zone play, as well as plenty of board play, which could potentially lead to some penalty time for both teams, giving room for seeing Power Play time where both teams will need to capitalize.

Below are some notes about the weekend, as well as media coverage if you choose to follow the game. We will have coverage about Saturday’s game, on Saturday afternoon.

Colonials top Queens 8-4 in Exhibition Opener

October 10, 2009 by Gero von Dehn

Gero is the Play by Play Announcer for the RMU Colonial Hockey team on Yahoo! Radio Broadcasts

The Colonials opened up the exhibition season with an 8-4 win over Queens University (Kingston, Ont) last night at Clearview Arena. RMU cruised to a 4-1 lead after 2 periods of play while holding the Gaels to just 7 shots on goal.

After Queens failed to score on an early 3rd period power play the game seemed all but in hand. However, at 3:39 of the 3rd the Gaels tallied a shorthanded goal off the stick of Chris Murphy and followed that up with a Thomas Franzen netter just 1:24 later. That was as close as Queens would get though with RMU responding with 4 goals down the stretch.

Nathan Longpre scored a pair for RMU and highly touted newcomer Zach Hervato showed big play ability with a goal and 3 helpers.

Final shots favored the Colonials 31-19.

Mackenzie Ball stopped 23 shots for Queens and Brooks Ostergard made 14 saves before giving way to freshman Joe Ziemianski for the final 2 minutes of play.

Furman South, Cody Chrichton, Chris Kushneriuk, Andrew Blazek and Scott Kobialko also scored goals for RMU and Brian Molloy and Joey Derochie scored for Queens.

RMU and Queens do battle again at 7:05 on tonight at the RMU Island Sports Center.
