Weekend Review and heading West to Alaska

Starting off fresh, 2-0 in Exhibition play

The puck finally dropped at the Island Sports Center this weekend after a long offseason, and the players, coaches and fans finally got to see their Colonials in action with a pair of victories over Queens University of Ontario. There was a good bit to be excited about as the Colonials put up 11 goals on the weekend while just yielding 6 to their opponent. Queens gave RMU a good weekend test, and the games allowed the coaching staff some opportunities to get some players, some on the bubble for starting jobs, significant ice time and also gave the chance to play with certain line combinations and different PP and PK looks.

So far, the Colonials look like they’re picking up right where they left off. The team was finishing checks, moving the puck very well on the power play, and the goaltenders were making some nice saves when the games were at potential turning points. Now comes the real test next weekend, as the Colonials meet the Alaska’s, (Fairbanks and Anchorage) for the first time in the program’s history. Here’s a few random observations and thoughts as we look forward to the start of the regular season.

New Goaltending & New Contributors

What a difference a year makes. After watching all three goaltenders in action this weekend, Brooks Ostergard, Eric Levine and Joe Ziemainski, you have to feel a lot better about the net minder situation this season as compared with last year’s. Ostergard and Levine, once they shook off some nerves, looked ready to start the season. The situation is as stable now as it was in the Boucher/Tuset years, and has the potential to put up better numbers moving forward this season as long as the team plays well in front of them.

Special thanks to Queens University this weekend. They gave the Colonials a good challenge in both games, and gave the coaches and players the ability to manage and overcome two different sets of game situations. Queens was also more focused on just playing hockey than Ryerson was the past two years. There was very little in the way of shenanigans, no very late hits or intent to injure, and with the exception of a small dust up in the 2nd period Saturday, no attempt at fisticuffs. The Queens coaches and players were a class act for the most part.

AHA and CBS College Sports Reach Broadcast Agreement

CBS College Sports, a broadcast channel on most sports package add-ons in the cable television world, has just announced a contract agreement to carry two Atlantic Hockey Association games this season, the same conference that Robert Morris and Niagara are heading to next season.

As college hockey continues to grow, this is an exciting venture for the Atlantic Hockey Association.

Atlantic Hockey Online

HAVERHILL, Mass. — CBS College Sports Network will air two Atlantic Hockey Association, games this season and has been confirmed by Atlantic Hockey Commissioner Robert DeGregorio. On Friday, January 8, UConn will travel to Colorado to take on Air Force at the Cadet Ice Arena with game time set for 8:00 pm ET. The second match-up will feature Army taking on Mercyhurst at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Friday, February 19, also at 8:00 pm ET.

Connecticut will be making its first ever appearance on national television, as the Huskies travel to the Cadet Ice Arena to take on Air Force on Friday, January 8. Air Force has appeared on CBS College Sports Network in the past, as the Falcons have played Army in the battle of the only two military academies in Division I Ice Hockey. Army and Mercyhurst will be facing each other for the second straight season on CBS College Sports Network, as the Black Knights defeated the Lakers at Tate Rink, 4-3, on January 10.

Air Force, which was chosen first by the coaches to win the Atlantic Hockey Regular Season Championship, looks to earn its fourth straight Atlantic Hockey Tournament Crown and a bid into the NCAA Hockey Tournament. Mercyhurst, picked second in the Pre-season poll, looks to upend Air Force for the Championship and the Atlantic Hockey bid into the NCAA Tournament. The last two seasons, Air Force and Mercyhurst have faced each other in the Atlantic Hockey Championship contest. Both Army and Connecticut, chosen sixth and ninth, respectively in the Pre-season Coaches Poll, will look to improve on their seasons from a year ago.

The Atlantic Hockey Association arose on June 30, 2003, to found a new Division-I men’s ice hockey conference. The league is comprised of ten members: Air Force Academy, American International College, Army, Bentley College, Canisius College, University of Connecticut, College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst College, Rochester Institute of Technology and Sacred Heart University. Niagara University and Robert Morris University will join the league for the start of the 2010-11 season.

The Boston Herald is reporting that the NHL will be making this year’s Winter Classic between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers, a Triple-Header. College Hockey will yet again see the outdoor game, as the heated rivalry of the Men’s Hockey Teams Boston College and Boston University will face off, as well as the Women’s Hockey teams of Northeastern and New Hampshire.

Boston Herald – John Connelly

When the NHL chose Fenway Park [map] for their next edition of the Winter Classic, speculation immediately began about a college hockey edition pitting archrivals Boston College and Boston University. Sources have informed the Herald that a deal is in place for the Terriers and Eagles to face off at Fenway on Jan. 8 – one week after the Bruins [team stats] play the Philadelphia Flyers.

The official announcement for the BC-BU outdoor encounter is expected a week from today, involving officials from both schools, Hockey East and the Fenway Sports Group. It is expected to be announced as a doubleheader, with the women’s teams from Northeastern and the University of New Hampshire kicking things off, followed by BC-BU with an 8 p.m. start time.

New Hampsire faces 2 years probation for recruiting violations

July 27, 2009 by Dave Weldon

From USCHO.com

July 23 — The NCAA has placed New Hampshire’s men’s hockey team on two years’ probation as part of a punishment for major recruiting violations.

The national association reported that a New Hampshire associate head coach sent 923 impermissible e-mail messages to 30 prospective student-athletes during the 2007-08 season.

The associate head coach, who was not named in the NCAA’s report, said he misinterpreted how data needed to be entered into recruiting software that sends e-mail messages to multiple recipients.

That, according to the report, led to 30 recruits getting e-mails from UNH before June 15 after the end of their freshman or sophomore years in high school.

The New Hampshire Union Leader reported that the associate head coach was Scott Borek.

“It was an honest mistake,” New Hampshire coach Dick Umile told the newspaper. “Probation means we can’t make another mistake. We self-reported when we realized a mistake had been made with the scouting software. Hopefully this sort of thing will not happen again.”

An NCAA committee on infractions decided more punishment than UNH was willing to give itself was warranted.

The punishments given to New Hampshire are:

• Public reprimand and censure.

• Two years of probation beginning on the date the university accepted the committee’s additional recommended penalties (April 24, 2009, to April 23, 2011). That punishment was self-imposed by the school.

• A reduction by one in the number of recruiters who are allowed to be off campus at the same time through Oct. 23.

• The 30 recruits will not be allowed to receive an expense-paid visit to the campus, nor will they be allowed to sign a National Letter of Intent with UNH. Both punishments were self-imposed.

The members of the Committee on Infractions who reviewed the case for the NCAA were: Paul Dee, chair of the committee and lecturer of law and education at Miami (Fla.) and formerly the institution’s athletics director and general counsel; John S. Black, attorney; Melissa Conboy, deputy athletic director at Notre Dame; Eileen Jennings, general counsel at Central Michigan; Britton Banowsky, commissioner of Conference USA; Alfred J. Lechner Jr., attorney; and Dennis Thomas, the commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and formerly athletic director at Hampton.

In a recent article in the Denver Post, columnist Mike Chambers wrote an article surrounding the financial status of each WCHA Head Coach, specifically Denver Pioneers Head Coach, George Gwozdecky. It’s hard to gage College Hockey across the board, when ESPN doesn’t hide from Coaching contracts in College Basketball, and there isn’t much coverage in the media for College Hockey, especially when Coaches sign new deals.

College players making a splash in ‘09 Draft

ncaaandentrydraft162 US College players were taken in this year’s NHL Draft. It’s been said that US players haven’t been able to make a substantial impact in the NHL as much as players coming out of the Canadian Junior Leagues, such as the OHL or QMJHL, where for example this year’s No. 1 pick, Johnathan Tavares came from (OHL- London Knights) and 2005’s No. 1 pick, Sidney Crosby (QMJHL – Rimouski)
