RMU Announces Captains for ‘09-’10 Season, awards for ‘08-’09 Season

RMU made the formal announcement today that Junior defenceman Dave Cowan has been named Captain for the 2009-2010 season, this will be his second season serving as the team’s Captain.

Sophomore Forwards Nathan Longpre and Chris Kushneriuk will serve as alternate captains for the upcoming season as well.

Colonial Award Winners for 2008-2009

MVP and Offensive Player of the Year: Senior, Forward Chris Margott

-Chris lead the Colonials and the CHA in scoring with 44 points (21 G, 23 A), he was ranked 19th in the Nation in scoring.

Defensive Player of the Year: Sophomore, Defenceman Denny Urban

-Denny lead all Colonial defencemen in scoring with 27 points (4 G, 23 A)

Freshman of the Year: Forward Trevor Lewis

-Trevor lead all Colonial Freshman with 17 points (7 G, 10 A), appearing in 34 games

Most Improved Player: Senior, Defenceman Jake Obermeyer

-Jake appeared in 33 games as a Senior, tallying 8 Points (1 G, 7 A)

Most Inspirational Player: Sophomore, Forward Chris Kushneriuk

-Chris was a transfer from Wayne State this past season, and in his first as a Colonial he put up 19 points (9 G, 10 A)

Student Athlete of the Year: Sophomore, Defenceman Brock Meadows

-Brock was also a transfer from Wayne State, he appeared in 33 games, scoring 4 points (1 G, 3 A)

A year ago at this time we were talking “where will Robert Morris Hockey compete next year? or will there even be Robert Morris Hockey in a few years?,” that focus quickly shifted to the thought of “where is the state of college hockey headed?.”  These questions have all been made on the basis of fear, assumptions and the never ending sight that change to the future can only bring a gloomy demise to college hockey as we know it.

That was a year ago.

A time-table of events that weren’t scheduled seem to be happening in just that effect, as if they were schedule and planned.  A four team conference in the CHA has seen it’s end, with that we saw four teams reaching out and looking for an answer, one that came, but was also seemingly presenting itself to be the ultimate answer.  Those fears and assumptions, quickly became thoughts of excitement and optimism.
