Score Sheet from Margott’s first game – Shootout Goal and 3rd Star of the game

The rumors have been squashed, as we have learned that Chris Margott will be in the lineup tonite for the Wheeling Nailers against the Reading Royals.  No official word of what line he may play on, but I was told that Margott was in Wheeling on Thursday and Friday with the team viewing practice and getting acclimated to his new environment.  There had also been a rumor swirling that Chris had fielded an offer from an AHL team, but turned it down.  Margott’s Colonial career ended March 14th in an overtime loss to the Bemidji State Beavers in the CHA Championship game.

Listen for Free to the Nailer’s game tonite here: Wheeling Nailers Radio

Margott finished the ‘08-’09 campaign with 36 games played, scoring 44 points (21 goals, 23 assists), 10 of which were on the powerplay.  In CHA Conference Play, he was ranked 1st in Points, 2nd in Goals, tied for 6th in Assists and  tied for 4th in Powerplay Points.

Nationally, Margott was ranked 14th in Points, tied for 9th in Goals and tied for 9th in Power Play Goals.

Chris finished his career with a total of 136 points in 134 games (64 goals, 72 assists).  Margott matched his career high in points (2007-2008) with 44 this season.

A Record Year for Margott:

This was also a record setting season for Chris, he became the Colonial All-Time Leader in points with 136, he added to his current lead in Career Goals with 64, and 30 powerplay goals.  His 72 assists is far ahead his former teammate Doug Conely’s mark of 48 (but was only over a two year period for Conely) He also put together a few single season records with his 10 power play goals are a Colonial Team Record, breaking former Colonial forward, Ryan Cruthers’ record of 9 from 2006 (Chris’ prior personal best was 8 in 2007).  Chris nearly tied Cruthers’ record for goals in a season (22), but put up a personal best of 21 this year, after putting up 18 goals in 2007.

In Review: The 2008-09 season featured both its ups and downs for the Colonials. However, Robert Morris should be thankful that the roller coaster ride took them to the top at the conclusion of the regular season. Before the heartbreaking loss at BSU last Saturday, Robert Morris had the second longest unbeaten streak in all of NCAA Div. I men’s ice hockey at seven games. In what seemed like a daunting conference schedule to end to the season, the Colonials finished the last eight games with a 4-1-3 record. Senior Chris Margott and sophomore Nathan Longpre led RMU by coming up with big goals when the team needed them the most. Also, the Colonials biggest question mark at the start of the season found a clear answer when freshman Brooks Ostergard emerged as a force to be reckoned with between the pipes. If the Colonials can continue to produce at key times, and Ostergard holds strong in net, look for Robert Morris continue its winning statement.

Scouting the Beavers: After taking just a one game break from playing Robert Morris, the Beavers and Colonials meet in the CHA Championship Game. The Beavers hold the obvious advantage of playing in their home facility in front of their faithful. Last night, Bemidji State make quick work of Alabama-Huntsville as they defeated the Chargers, 4-1. Senior forward Tyler Scofield has been hot as of late. When the Colonials and Beavers met exactly a week ago, Scofield recorded his 100th career point while also tallying a hat trick. CHA Rookie of the Year, Brad Hunt is also one to watch. He picked up 19 points during the regular season making him the leagues top scoring defenseman. BSU also boasts netminder Matt Dalton. Dalton has allowed RMU to 17 goals during their eight meetings in the regular season. He has an overall save percentage of .917 and a 2.27 GAA.

Power Restored: Over the past two weekends, the Colonials have made a resurgence on the power play. Overall, Robert Morris has converted on 35 of 189 attempts for a 18.5% average. Just a few weeks ago, RMU was ranked nationally as the 8th highest power play team in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey. The Colonials currently hold the 15th spot. Also, Robert Morris is second in the CHA in penalty killing. The Colonial defensive effort is 158 for 192, killing off 82.3% of their opponents power play opportunities.

Leading the Pack: After playing all 34 contests of the 2008-09 season, two Robert Morris players finished the season at the top of the standings for scoring in the CHA. Senior forward Chris Margott is in first place on the leader board, notching 20 goals and 22 assists for 42 points. Last season, Margott finished fourth in the CHA for his scoring total of 11 goals and 14 assists. Sophomore Nathan Longpre concluded the year just two points behind Margott and has tallied 12 goals and 28 assists for 40 points. These point totals also rank Margott and Longpre nationally. Margott is ranked 11th in total goals, 11th in power play goals, 8th for points per game and 12th in overall scoring. Longpre comes in with a 8th ranking for total assists, 9th in assists per game and is also 17th in overall scoring. Additionally, Margott ranks 9th in career points out of all active scorers in college hockey.

2009 CHA Awards: In the past week, five Colonials earned CHA mention for their outstanding play during the 2008-09 season. Freshmen James Lyle and Brooks Ostergard were named to the 2009 All-CHA Rookie Team. Lyle, a defenseman, posted three goals and seven assists. Ostergard came alive in the second half of the season finishing with a .913 save percentage and a 2.70 GAA. The only squad to grab three spots on the CHA All-First Team, Robert Morris had Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban all earned conference honors for the second straight season. Last year, Margott was named to the CHA-All Second Team while Longpre and Urban earned All-Rookie Team laurels. Urban put up three goals and 23 assists as the second best scoring defenseman in the CHA.

Back-to-Back: Two members of the Robert Morris University men’s hockey team were honored by CHA for the second consecutive week as the leagues top players on March 2. Freshman Brooks Ostergard and sophomore Nathan Longpre led the Colonials to two ties this past weekend to extend their unbeaten streak to six-games. Ostergard’s award is his third of the season from the CHA, however this is his first Defensive Players of the Week honor after being named Rookie of the Week for the past two weeks. Longpre nabbed CHA Offensive player of the week honors for the second consecutive week after recording a pair of goals against the Purple Eagles in Friday’s 3-3 tie including the game-tying goal. He also led RMU in shots-on-goal in Saturday’s 0-0 tie against the Purple Eagles.

Margott & Ostergard Snag Accolades: On Monday, Feb. 16, the Robert Morris University men’s hockey team had two student athletes recognized by the CHA for their outstanding play in conference action over the weekend. Senior Chris Margott picked up his second Offensive Player of the Week award in 2008-09, while freshman Brooks Ostergard received his first career mention. Margott, currently the CHA’s leading scorer, tallied two goals and one assist in the two-game series against the Beavers at the Island Sports Center. On Feb. 13, he notched the game winner and the Colonial’s first goal of the weekend to lead the team in their 3-0 shutout victory. In the Feb. 14 deadlock, Margott once again put the Colonials opening score on board and assisted on Nathan Longpre’s goal that tied the game at three all. So far this season, Margott has accumulated 17 goals and 15 assists for a total of 32 points. In between the pipes, the Colonial’s received a tremendous effort from Ostergard. In only his third start of the 2008-09 season, he recorded his first career victory and shutout simultaneously on Friday night. On Saturday he notched another first with his first tie decision. Ostergard posted a total of 64 saves over the weekend, boosting his save percentage in CHA action to .924 with a 2.34 GAA. The freshman was also awarded the first star in Friday’s contest for his stellar performance. RMU’s Friday shutout was the first since Dec. 30, 2006.

Robert Morris Joins Atlantic Hockey Association: Robert Morris University has accepted an invitation to join the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) and will be admitted administratively for the 2009-10 season and will start competition in the league for the start of the 2010-11 season. The announcement of the Colonials joining the ranks of Atlantic Hockey was made official at a press conference Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 in the Hat Trick Club at the Island Sports Center. For the 2010-11 season, the teams in the AHA will be split into geographical scheduling pods. Teams in each of the “regions” will play three games against teams in their own “region”, while playing two cross over games against the other “regions” squads. Each team will play a total of 27 conference games with the standings including all 12 members. Playoffs for the 2010-11 season will be determined prior to the start of that season.

Streak Snapped: Prior to Game 20 against Quinnipiac on Jan. 23, Robert Morris had yet to score the first goal in any match up. RMU took an early 1-0 lead in their 4-5 defeat on Friday night. On Saturday, Jan. 31, the Colonials snapped the streak at home when taking a 1-0 edge on Bemidji State. The Colonials were outscored 59-89 in the first 24 games and outscored 13-29 in the first period. However, Colonial goaltending managed to hold on strong strong early, making more saves in the first period than any other period.

Kushneriuk, Lewis Pick Up CHA Awards: A pair of Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey players were honored Monday by College Hockey America as sophomore forward Chris Kushneriuk was named the CHA Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman forward Trevor Lewis was tabbed the CHA Rookie of the Week. Kushneriuk, a transfer from Wayne State University, had a hand in half of that offensive output scoring a pair of goals and adding four assists. Lewis picks up his second conference honor after posting a four point (1g, 3a) weekend.

Alums in the AHL: Over the winter break, two former Colonials were called up to AHL affiliates.  Aaron Clarke, a 2006 graduate, became the first Robert Morris player to play professionally after graduation.  He spent the beginning of the 2008-09 season, and entire 2007-08 season with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.   On Dec. 26, the Binghamton Senators signed Clarke to a 25-game professional tryout agreement. Clarke recorded a game winner and his first AHL goal in only his second game with Binghamton.  A 2008 graduate and Hobey Baker finalist, Ryan Cruthers started the 2008-09 season with the Mississippi Sea Wolves (ECHL). Scoring 35 points in 29 games for the Sea Wolves, Cruthers was named to the ECHL All-Star Team on Dec. 31 as the leading rookie scorer in the league.  Also on Dec. 26, he was signed to the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL) where his as since appeared in four games while notching two assists.

Longpre Once Again POTW: For the second time this season, sophomore forward Nathan Longpre was  named CHA’s Offensive Player of the Week on Dec. 8, 2008. Longpre picked up five points in two games over the Dec. 5-6 weekend.  On Friday night against CHA foe, Niagara, Longpre had a hand in both goals, scoring one and assisting on the other. In Saturday’s contest against Ohio State, Longpre tallied his second goal of the weekend and added a pair of helpers to round out the weekend.

Towsley is Tops: In the Dec. 5 contest against Niagara, senior forward Jason Towsley recorded his third goal and fourth point in just two games.  He picked up Robert Morris’ first score of the night to tie the game at one late in the first period. Also, On November 24, 2008, Towsley led the Colonial scoring efforts in both games at LSSU tallying three points.  For his efforts, Towsley was named CHA Offensive Player of the Week.  In Friday’s contest, Towsley recorded an assist on the Colonial’s lone goal of the night.  On Saturday, Towsley notched two goals against the Lakers.  His first score gave Robert Morris its first lead of the weekend, putting the Colonials ahead 2-1.  Just over a minute later, Towsley struck for a second time to extend the lead to 3-1 in favor of RMU.

Hervato Commits: Head Coach Derek Schooley has announced that Zach Hervato signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his hockey career at RMU. Hervato is the first addition to the Class of 2013. This was the third consecutive week Colonials earned awards from the CHA. Margott picked up his 100th career point as he scored RMU’s first goal against UAH on Friday night. He also would go on to pick up the game tying goal with less than two minutes remaining. On Saturday, Margott put forth another strong performance when he tied the game at two all in the Colonials come from behind victory over the Chargers. He now is the leading scorer in the CHA with ten points. Urban had a solid four point weekend as he notched a helper on four of the six Robert Morris’ goals. Welcome to the 100 Point Club: On Friday, October 31, 2008, senior Chris Margott picked up his 100th career point as he scored RMU’s first goal against Alabama-Huntsville. This makes him only the second player in RMU hockey history to accomplish such a feat. He went on to total four point in the series, recording three goals and one assist.

50th Win: The October 17, 2008 win over Ferris State marked the 50th win in Colonial Hockey history. Also, the win gave Head Coach Derek Schooley his 50th career victory. Coach Schooley has been with the Robert Morris hockey program since it’s creation in 2004.

The 2008-09 Season: The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team graduated 14 seniors in the Class of 2008. Since the completion of the 2007-08 season, ten Colonials have signed professional contracts with various AHL, CHL and ECHL franchises. Rumor has it that the 2pm game tomorrow, Robert Morris against Niagara will not be broadcasted via the B2 Networks or ROMO TV.

Apparently, KBSU TV, a closed-circuit and small cable broadcast station, which is operated by Bemidji State Univeristy, will be broadcasting and covering the games in which Bemidji is involved, but they will not be covering the other two games.  Costs to the production needing to be covered by the participating Universities (not named Bemidji State) are the cited reason that KBSU will not be covering the games.  It is unkown to a full extent if this will effect the B2 Networks coverage of the non-KBSU covered games.

Currently only the 7pm game between Bemidji and Alabama-Huntsville is listed as being available – B2 Networks.  As mentioned earlier, Robert Morris’ “ROMO TV” does not have the 2pm RMU game listed in their broadcast schedule – ROMO TV.

Needless to say, I’m a little upset, mainly because this is all that is needed in order for us back in Pittsburgh, or the world, would need to see at least the coaches cam, with the KBBJ Radio feed being brought in for audio – Amazon.com: Canopus Converter $224.80.  How do I know that this is all it would take, because this is what they use, but the two that the University own, are being used for a Men’s Lacrosse game and a Softball game….

Before getting to the game, congrats to Senior Chris Margott, Sophomore’s Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban, for making the CHA-ALL 1st Team.  Margott finished the season leading the CHA in scoring, while his linemate Longpre finished 2nd in league play in scoring. Denny Urban was only second to Bemidji State’s Brad Hunt in defensive leading scorers, in league play.

Freshmen Goaltender Brooks Ostergard and Defenseman James Lyle, were both named to the CHA-ALL Rookie Team.  Lyle has played in 31 games this season, and as most of us remember Ostergard came on strong at the end of the season, helping the Colonials to their 7 game point streak.

Coach Schooley had been quoted in a few recent interviews of wanting to find a way to keep his team loose during the long week out in Bemidji, apparently the Bemidji Pioneer took notice – Getting to know Bemidji.  Looks like the team found some ways to let off some steam and have a good spring break.

RMU’s 7 game unbeaten streak (4-0-3, 11 points) was snapped Saturday Night as the BSU Beavers pilled on 6 goals, to split the weekend series.  The Colonials will face the Niagara Purple Eagles Friday March 13th at 2pm in Game 1 of the CHA Tournament.  I will have more information regarding how you can listen, watch and keep up to date on the game, later this week.

Game Recap from BSU Athletics

Game Recap From RMUColonials.com

Bemidji, Minn. – After a successful start to the weekend, the Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey teamed hoped to continue its winning ways in its final regular season contest against CHA foe, Bemidji State. For the second straight night, the Colonials grabbed an early 1-0 lead. However, the Beaver offense came to life in the second period with two shorthanded goals as they defeated RMU, 6-4.

“Despite the loss, I am very proud of the way we finished the season,” said head coach Derek Schooley.  “We put ourselves in a good frame of mind entering the playoffs. It is a new season and all four teams are just two wins away from the NCAA Tournament.”

With only seconds remaining in the first period, Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Canucks) struck for the seventh time of the year to take the lead. The goal, scored at 19:53, was assisted by freshmen Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) and Brandon Blandina (Centennial, Colo. / Indiana Ice).

However, it took little time for BSU’s Tyler Scofield to tie the game at one all. His power play goal scored at 2:33 of the second period was assisted by Matt Francis and Brad Hunt.

But just 23 seconds later, the Colonial’s senior forward, Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) would reclaim the lead for Robert Morris. Sophomore Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) and freshman Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars) earned helpers on the goal at 2:56 of the second.

Yet once again, the back and forth nature of the contest continued when Francis tied the game for a second time, this time at two goals apiece. Scofield would get his second point of the night with an assist while Shea Walters picked up the secondary assist at 4:00.

The Beavers grabbed their first lead of the weekend when Scofield tallied his 100th career point to put BSU up 3-2 with assists from Hunt and Francis at 5:03

The Colonials, not satisfied with the current score, struck back when James Lyle (Nepean, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) put the puck in the net to allow RMU to tie the game at 7:46. Lyles power play goal, assisted by Jason Towsley (LaSalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) and Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alberta / Camrose Kodiaks) deadlocked the game at three.

Just a few minutes later, sophomore Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa / Ohio Blue Jackets) tacked on another Colonial goal with the help of Longpre and Margott to extend the lead to 4-3. Urban’s goal, scored on a power play, was recorded at 9:49 of the second period.

Scofield, fresh off of scoring his 100th career point, made it a memorable night by netting a hat trick with the Beaver’s fourth goal. Scofield’s shorthanded goal from Matt Read and Hut also tied the game for the fourth time of the night.

The Beaver’s continued firing away and netted their fifth goal of the second period courtesy of an unassisted, shorthanded goal scored by Reade to give the Beavers a 5-4 advantage. The shorthander was only the second for the Beavers in the 2008-09 season.

The Colonials fought hard in the third, but only managed to put four shots on goal despite four power play opportunities. The Beavers picked up their sixth score with an empty net goal with just seconds remaining.

Each team racked up numerous penalty minutes in the contest. RMU recorded seven penalities for 22 minutes while BSU had 12 penalties for 43 minutes.

Freshman goalie Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) made the start in goal, but only played for the first 30 minutes as he gave up four goals in the second. He was replaced in net by sophomore Jim Patterson (Kamloops, BC / Canmore Eagles ) who gave up one goal in nearly 29 minutes of action. Ostergard had 17 saves while Patterson made 20.

Saturday’s game marked the conclusion of the 2008-09 regular season for the Colonials. Robert Morris will enter the CHA Tournament next Friday as the third seed when they face second seed Niagara in a semifinal bout. The CHA Tournament is being hosting by Bemidji State at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse.

Friday’s Final Score: 3-2 Win

(Margott scored twice, tallying points 39 and 40 on the season.  Jason Towsley picked up the 1st goal of the game, about 2 minutes in)

They must have drank the Kool-Aid, cause someone gave them an “Oh Yeah” before the game.  The winning streak now runs to 7 games in a row.  I didn’t get the chance to listen to the entire game, or watch it online, but I recorded it on my desktop.  I’ll atleast take a listen to the highlights.  From what I heard in the beginning of the game, RMU was forcing the Beavers to play to their style, which greatly put us to the advantage.

Note that the game time tomorrow will be roughly 8:05pm ET.  Check back later in the day for updated Media links.

From RMUColonials.com

Bemidji, Minn. – Looking to close out the regular season on a high note, the Robert Morris University men’s hockey team traveled north to face the Beavers of Bemidji State University for the fifth time in just five weeks. Late in the first period, the Colonials took a 1-0 lead as they continued their unbeaten streak and extended it to seven games as they beat BSU, 3-2.

“We played hard, once again had good goaltending and our penalty killing was excellent, ” said head coach Derek Schooley.  “We got timely production from Margott and Towsley and we showed a great deal of character by playing so well in a difficult place.”

CHA Defensive Player of the Week, Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers), made his ninth consecutive start in net for Robert Morris on Friday night. He stopped 12 shots in the first period while the Colonials managed to put five shots on goal.

With two minutes left to play in the first, senior Jason Towsley (LaSalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) netted his ninth score of the 2008-09 season. Assists on the goal were awarded to Brock Meadows (White Rock, B.C. / Wayne State) and Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alberta / Camrose Kodiaks) at 18:09.

The second period was relatively quiet except for quite a few penalty minutes issued to both squads. Although the Colonials had a few power play opportunities to extend their lead to two, they were unable to do so in the second.

Ostergard made another four saves and the RMU offense tallied an additional 10 shots on goal. By not allowing a goal in the second, Ostergard extended his streak to five consecutive shutout periods.

The Colonials finally got their second goal of the night off a Beaver turnover. Senior Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers), the CHA’s top scorer, lit the lamp at 5:50 of the third period with an assist from freshman Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars).

However, the two goal lead would be short lived. Bemidji’s Matt Francis recorded the Beaver’s first of the game at 7:10. Assists on Francis’ goal were picked up by Tyler Scofield and Brad Hunt.

RMU added its third score off of a one timer from Margott and solid connections from sophomores Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) and Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) at 12:14. Margott’s power play goal was his 18th score of the year.

Even with time dwindling, the Beavers refused to go away. Francis picked up a rebound in front of the Colonial net to push the puck past Ostergard and bring BSU back to within one. Matt Read and Hunt were awarded the assists on the goal.

Ostergard finished the night with 28 saves while the team finished with 28 shots on the Beaver goal.

The Colonials (9-17-7 ; 5-7-5 CHA) will finish the 2008-09 regular season tomorrow night in their second game against the Beavers at John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The matchup is set for a 7:05 p.m.(CST) tilt.

Game Notes – RMUColonials.com

It’s been a long week, I haven’t had much time to update the site, so apologies for my tardiness on keeping things up to date.

Last weekend we saw a great matchup against the Niagara Purple Eagles, both games ending in draws.  Friday’s game was broadcasted on RMU-TV Channel 98 on Comcast, and will be available on Comcast OnDemand very soon.  We are in the process of getting Comcast the correct format they need to get it up.  We are also going to be launching a new Video section to RMU Centre Ice, which is where we will archive televised games, as well as audio clips and any other Colonial Hockey Features.

RMU has a great chance to put themselves in position to have a strong CHA Tournament run.  No one really expected this team to come together like this late in the season.  Growing up, the one thing I was always pointed towards was the idea of how you finish and not how you start.  This team has proven to rally when it matters most, late in the game (and in the season).

After listening to the KKBJ Pre-game show, I can say one thing, Bemidji State = Nervous.  BSU Coach Tom Serratore (para-phrasing of course) “Look at the Detroit Redwings last season, when they road the shoulders of Chris Osgood, RMU’s got a great talent in net in Ostergard…sigh…so yea.”

A few notes:

Senior Forward, Chris Margott was not named to the Frozen Four Skills Challenge, bummer, would have been nice to get some more exposure.

RMU prospect goaltender, Eric Levine, was named CJHL Goaltender of the Year.

RMU has added another recruit to next year’s squad, Stefan Salituro, forward from the NAHL Phantoms
