Colgate tops RMU in Governor’s Cup

ALBANY (Oct. 24)Colgate’s Brian Day had himself a day Friday against Robert Morris in the Governor’s Cup.

Day had a natural hat trick in the first period, scoring his three goals three different ways, and he became the first player in the tournament’s three-year history to have a hat trick as he led the Raiders to a 5-2 victory in the first semifinal at the Times Union Center.

The Raiders (3-0) make their third straight championship game appearance, and are seeking their first title. They will face Union Saturday night at 8 p.m.

“We wanted to come out flying,” said Day, who has five goals on the season. “We wanted to set the tone for the tournament.”

Day did that with his incredible first period.

After Tom Riley gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal at 4:18, Day went to work. He got an even-strength goal, completing a perfect give-and-go passing play with David McIntyre.

“Me and David played together last year,” Day said. “We just have a knack for knowing where each other are. He found me back there. I didn’t even expect the pass back, and he put it right on my tape.”

Day scored a power-play goal at 8:58, chasing Colonials’ starting goalie Wes Russell from the game. He completed his first career hat trick with a short-handed goal, beating goalie Jim Patterson on a breakaway with 2:45 left in the period. He stole the puck from defenseman Denny Urban at the Colgate blue line.

“One of the biggest things on our PK [penalty kill] is puck pressure,” Day said. “We didn’t want to allow them let them set up in the zone, and to pressure the puck. As soon as he bobbled the puck, I went right at him.”

Day is the first Colgate player to score a natural hat trick three different ways since Kyle Wilson did it against Army on Oct. 21, 2005.

“He’s a big-time player,” Colgate Coach Don Vaughan said of Day. “It’s not often you see a natural hat trick, one on each situation.”

Canton, N.Y. (October 25, 2008) — The Robert Morris University Colonials fell to No. 9 St. Lawrence for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon at the Appleton arena. The Colonials were able to hold the Saints to just two goals in the first and second period, but St. Lawrence had a surge of goals in third to take the 5-0 win.

Marianna Locke put St. Lawrence on the scoreboard just two minutes into action, with Vanessa Edmond adding the assist. The Colonial defense was able to hold off the Saint attack for the remainder of the first period, with senior goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio / Ohio Flames) putting up 15 saves. Brittany Chartier added two saves for the Saints.

Robert Morris continued to hold off the Saints until 15 minutes into second period action, despite the Saint’s triggering off shot after shot. With five minutes left to go in the first period Alley Bero netted the Saints second goal to give St. Lawrence the two goal cushion.

St. Lawrence outshot the Colonials 18 to three in the second period, with McLaughlin holding off 18 pucks and Chartier stopping three.

The Saints scored another quick goal upon entering the third period, when Alison Domenico slipped a puck past McLaughlin at 1:25. Domenico came back three minutes later and scored her second goal of the contest to put the saints up 4-0.

St. Lawrence’s Alley Bero tallied her second goal of the contest with two minutes left on clock during a power-play for the Saint’s final score.

The Colonials held the Saints to only one power-play goal, despite having 10 opportunities, while Robert Morris went 0-8 on power-play opportunities.

McLaughlin finished the game with 35 saves, while sophomore Colonial netminder Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) added 10 saves. St. Lawrence goalie Chartier put up 13 saves for her third win of the season.

The Colonials are now 3-3 and return to action on Friday, Oct. 31 when they face RIT in Rochester, N.Y. at 3:00 p.m.

The freshman picked up a goal in each one of the Colonial’s games at the Governor’s Cup Tournament in Albany, N.Y.

In Friday’s contest against Colgate, Lewis netted his first goal of the season in a 5-2 loss to the Raiders. On Saturday, Lewis tallied his second of the weekend with Robert Morris’ lone goal in the 2-1 defeat against Rensselaer.

While playing for the Syracuse Stars (EJHL) during the 2007-08 season, he recorded 31 goals and 36 assists to lead the league in scoring. Lewis was named to the 2007-08 EJHL All-Star Team, and also earned EJHL Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year accolades for his efforts.

Canton, N.Y. (October 24, 2008) — Despite firing off only four less shots than the No. 9 St. Lawrence Saints, the Robert Morris University women’s ice hockey team fell to the Saints on Friday evening at the Appleton Arena, 5-1. Sophomore Kylie Rossler (Regina, Saskatchewan / Regina Rebels) tallied the team’s lone score for her first goal of the season.

The St. Lawrence Saints got the early lead with a goal by Carson Duggan at 6:37 in the first period. Less than two minutes later the Colonials answered back with a goal of their own, when sophomore  Rossler found the back of the net on an unassisted play to tie things up 1-1. The goal marks Rossler’s first of the season.

Both teams continued to fire shots at the net, but neither could connect until Saint player Britni Smith snuck a puck past senior goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) late in the first period. St. Lawrence earned a power-play advantage at 17:46, but Robert Morris was able to hold off the five on four attack. Unfortunately, 10 seconds after the penalty ended, Duggan grabbed her second goal of the game with only five seconds left on the clock, giving St. Lawrence the 3-1 lead going into the second period.

The Saints outshot the Colonials 12 to nine in the first period and McLaughlin captured nine saves, while Saint goalie Brittany Chartier earned eight.

St. Lawrence started off the second period with a goal at 1:41 during a power-play advantage. Alison Domenico netted the goal with Tara Akstull and Marianne Locke adding the helper. 10 minutes later Carson Duggan triggered off a shot that found its way into the net to earn a hat trick.

Despite a solid effort by the Colonials and putting off 10 shots to the Saint’s nine they were unable to get any shots to fall and entered the third period with a four goal deficit.

The Colonials and the Saints each launched off more shots in the third period than both the first and second period with 10 and 12, respectively, but neither squad was able to tally a goal.

Robert Morris fired off a total of 26 shots to St. Lawrence’s 30 and Colonial goalie McLaughlin finished with 26 saves, while Saint netminder Chartier ended the game with 30 saves. The Colonials fired off 26 shots to the Saint’s 30 and St. Lawrence went 2-7 on power-play opportunities, while Robert Morris was 0-3.

The Colonials will get a second chance against the Saints tomorrow, Oct. 25 at 4:00 p.m. at the Appleton Arena.

The Colonials fell in their Govenor’s Cup debut to Colgate in a 5-2 loss Friday night.  I was unable to attend the game in NY, but check back in the coming days for more information about the team so far as I will get in touch with Coach Schooley and some of the players to get their comments on the season so far!

From RMUColonials.com

Albany, NY – On Friday afternoon, the Robert Morris University men’s hockey team faced off against Colgate University at the Times Union Center in the Third Annual Governor’s Cup Tournament. The Colonials had a rough start, giving up four goals in just the first 18 minutes helping Colgate to skate to a 5-2 victory.

Colgate’s Tom Riley scored on a shot over the shoulder of Robert Morris goaltender, Wes Russell (Springfield, Ill. / Quinnipiac) at the 4:18 mark to take the early 1-0 lead on the power play. Assists on the goal went to Nick St. Pierre and Francois Brisebois.

The Raiders took a two goal advantage at even strength as Brian Day netted his third goal of the season off of a pass from David McIntyre at 7:31 in the first period.

At the 8:58 mark, Colgate’s Day extended the lead to 3-0 when he knocked in a shot from the right side of the net. After the third goal, Colonial goalie Russell was replaced by sophomore Jim Patterson (Kamloops, B.C. / Canmore Eagles).

Colgate made the score 4-0 as Day broke away and pushed one past Patterson to record a natural hat trick, the first of his career. The unassisted goal was also scored shorthanded with just over three minutes remaining in the first.

To start the second period, the Colonials came out fighting. Freshman Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars) notched his first goal of the season off an assist from Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) at 5:10 to make the score 4-1.

Less than one minute later, sophomore Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Canucks) would cut the Raider’s lead in half with an unassisted goal, his second score of the year.

However the Colonials momentum swing would be short lived. Colgate’s Brisebois extended the Raiders lead to 5-2 with his goal at 7:06 off of assists from Jason Williams and Nick Prockow.

The third period was dominated by solid defensive play as each team held the other scoreless for all 20 minutes. Robert Morris had three power play opportunities, but the team was unable translate the advantages into points.

Overall, the Colonials were 0-6 on the power play and were outshot 31-22 by the Raiders. Russell played nearly nine minutes, allowed three goals and made three saves. Patterson played the remaining portion of the game allowing two goals and stopping 23 shots.

On Saturday, October 25, the Colonials will play the winner of the Rensselaer vs. Union match up at 4:05 p.m. at the Times Union Center.

The Colonials are competing in the Governor’s Cup Tournament after being invited after being picked to be the first non-conference team for this year’s tournament, after the Lefty McFadden Tournament was abrubtley cancelled, which made the decision to compete in this year’s tournament an excitable decisison for Coach Schooley and his staff.
